Conservatory Style: Garden Rooms, Glasshouses, and Sunrooms

Conservatory Style: Garden Rooms, Glasshouses, and Sunrooms

Born out of the heritage of structures first imagined by and constructed for the British aristocracy, the contemporary conservatory represents the ultimate in traditional elegance married to informal comfort. With or without plants and flowers, they come in every conceivable size and shape-square, oblong, octagonal, or whatever your pleasure. The conservatory adds a treasured space to any home and makes a strong statement of individual style. The conservatories surveyed here play a rich architectural role through the use of classic detailing or sophisticated modern materials. Some are based on graceful Victorian antecedents while others are modernist sculptures of glass and steel. The evocative photographs in the book survey the spectrum of styles and interior design-everything from a Zen-inspired glass perch where the landscape outside becomes the room to a casual lounging area enclosed by a virtual jungle canopy. Specific chapters focus on decorating and accessorizing and demystify difficult decisions (color schemes, floor materials, and controlling natural light). Recent advances in weatherproofing, glass engineering, flooring, lighting, and zoned heating and cooling are covered. Also included is an A-to-Z glossary of recommended plants plus a directory of manufacturers and suppliers.

Conservatories: A Complete Guide

Adding a conservatory to a house is one of the most popular home-improvement projects, but those wishing to extend their homes in this way have found it difficult to obtain practical, well-informed, and independent advice. This invaluable book addresses this problem and provides a comprehensive step-by-step guide. It describes how to design a conservatory that will suit your requirements and blend in with your property; it covers how to seek professional advice, budgetary, planning, and obtaining quotations; and it looks at suppliers, construction materials, the building process, interior furnishings, and much more.

Effect of building integrated photovoltaics on microclimate of urban canopy layer [An article from: Building and Environment]

This digital document is a journal article from Building and Environment, published by Elsevier in 2007. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) has potential of becoming the mainstream of renewable energy in the urban environment. BIPV has significant influence on the thermal performance of building envelope and changes radiation energy balance by adding or replacing conventional building elements in urban areas. PTEBU model was developed to evaluate the effect of photovoltaic (PV) system on the microclimate of urban canopy layer. PTEBU model consists of four sub-models: PV thermal model, PV electrical performance model, building energy consumption model, and urban canyon energy budget model. PTEBU model is forced with temperature, wind speed, and solar radiation above the roof level and incorporates detailed data of PV system and urban canyon in Tianjin, China. The simulation results show that PV roof and PV facade with ventilated air gap significantly change the building surface temperature and sensible heat flux density, but the air temperature of urban canyon with PV module varies little compared with the urban canyon of no PV. The PV module also changes the magnitude and pattern of diurnal variation of the storage heat flux and the net radiation for the urban canyon with PV increase slightly. The increase in the PV conversion efficiency not only improves the PV power output, but also reduces the urban canyon air temperature.

The Magic of Tents: Transforming Space

For years, architects have enjoyed the challenge of incorporating lightweight structures -- fabrics, tents, canopies, membranes, and so on -- into their designs.Such materials are a welcome boon to architectural creativity, allowing designers to envision spaces that take innovative shapes and interact with their surroundings in ways unattainable with conventional materials. Recent years have seen an increase in the use of such structures, in part because advances in computer technology have made it easier to render and model such projects, and in part because such structures are ideally suited to today's increasing concerns about environmentalism and sustainability.
The Magic of Tents showcases innovative uses of lightweight, tented structures from across the United States and around the world -- from an Arizona school to an Istanbul bank, from a Miami nightclub on the beach to a private home in Germany, from corporate headquarters in Los Angeles to offices in Oslo, and many more! The book features both residential and commercial projects, projects with both exterior and interior usages, projects where the tented element is the driving component of the design, and projects that incorporate lightweight structures to accent or address a specific need.
Endlessly flexible, nurturing of creativity, cost -- and energy-conscious, tented structures are an ideal means to address many concerns of modern architecture -- a creative means to not only define space, but also to transform it into something to meet all sorts of design needs, for projects both grand and small.

Watch the Antenna 198/365

Day 198: My wireless shutter release finally arrived on the Slow Boat from China. This was one of the last things I ordered before going on my "fast" from camera purchases. I ordered it a month ago, but it was delayed by the Chinese new year celebration (understandable).

Canon wasn't kind enough to put an IR remote port on their expensive cameras because they expect you to buy their $400 remote system. Instead I bought this $27 Yongnuo remote from a seller in China on eBay. It is very well built and feels very reliable considering the price.

You can half press the shutter and can even do bulb mode shooting with separate shutter presses. Just like the canon, it has a receiver that attaches to the wired shutter release and the flash hot-shoe that can also be used as a wired remote. You can even pick your nose.

Zero processing on the pic, and I accidentally left the camera at ISO 3200. I hate it when I do that. I should have got the clue when I had to set it to f/11 and 1/16th flash power.

What a difference it made to have the right equipment with me when I took this. A wireless remote control shutter release meant I could keep my shaky hands off the tripod. This one was taken with my 100mm macro lens and there is only a small crop on it. The foreground leaves are a bit blurred because of the wind. I had the variable neutral density filter attached and set to its brightest setting. I didn't really need it as it was very dark under the trees surrounding the waterfall.

Light & Air

October 30th, 2004:

My big project for today was installing a new ceiling fan in our bedroom.

First I had to buy one. Instead of going out to a Home Depot in the suburbs, I went to Armstrong’s which is only a few blocks from our house in Mid-City. I had to wait my turn, but it was well worth it, because the saleslady was very helpful. The ceiling fans weren’t just off-the-shelf kits; you had to build your own. I couldn’t have put together all the components without some assistance. I ended up taking home a Craftmade Phoenix PX52 with a brushed nickel finish, oak blades, a four bulb lamp and some really nifty iridescent glass shades.

Of course, before I could install it, I had to remove the old defunct fan. It had never really worked right since we moved in. It was always extremely wobbly and noisy and I could never get it balanced. Sometime this summer the fan stopped working, and just a week or two ago the pull for the light came out, rendering it completely useless.

So, out with the old, in with the new.

It was actually easier to install than I’d expected. The whole job probably took two hours. And it seems to work beautifully.

I like stuff like this. I like the smooth flow of white to black and all the shades in between. The picture itself is nothing fancy but it's off center enough that it's not too geometric or static. Small details like the wavy shapes on the glass are points of interest. View full size.

Clear Skies

Clear Skies

Last night I headed out to do some more night work, the forecast was for clear skies, however when I left the house at 1am I quickly realised the forecast was wrong. I decided to head out anyway as the moon behind the clouds was brilliant, my destination was Lea Road station, but I’ll talk more about that tomorrow. On the way down Middlefield Lane I tried to get a shot of the nodding donkeys from on top of the hill that surrounds the enclosure. The shot I took was interesting but I would have rather been closure to it, while my camera was at work I looked at the moon shining behind the clouds and decided to take a photograph showing the BBC’s idea of a clear sky.

This morning during Look North’s weather report they even talked about the weather front the brought clear sky. I e-mailed them this shot in response to that, as the increasing cloud cover lead me to head back with only one location photographer.
